What girls want…

GirlAnnual1964Picked this up in a charity shop a while ago… just for the cover, but it’s got a picture story inside called “A Scooter to Sydney” which I might get round to scanning in one day!

Fill her up, please!

Filling up a TV175 with premixed "Pertroil"

I’ve got a bit of a thing for old pics like this… clearly an old publicity shot for BP, but it tells you so much more than it appears to at first glance.

Firstly, and most obviously, is the forecourt service. I vaguely remember people coming to fill my dads car up with petrol… and they still do that at at least one garage the Isle of Wight! Secondly, BP had a pre-mixed “Petroil” product called BP Zoom… a mix of their petrol and Energoil branded 2-stroke. There were a lot more 2 strokes about then, I suppose… but did they all run the same mix? Or could you vary the mix at the pump? Anyone know? Thirdly, and I never knew this, petrol was sold bu the PINT! Remember gallons, obviously… but not pints! Fourthly; (I’m going to give up numbering everything, it’s getting boring) The unit that dispensed the petroil, could be wheeled out… it wasn’t a fixed part of the forecourt. I expect they filled it with petrol from the pumps, and then mixed in the 2 Stroke.

National Scooter Bay
Another shot of a similar vintage shows another young lady filling at a”scooter bay” at a National filling station, their brand of premix named “Hi-Fli”. Thislooks altogether more modern, although the scooter is obviously a Series 1. Anybody got any more shots like this?

Lorryload of Lammies

Lorryload of Lammies

Came across this pic online… probably a delivery of machines from Italy to Lambretta Concessionaires… I wonder what the contents of that trailer would be worth today!

Vintage video… TV2 and Bubblecar

Vintage film of a young guy riding his Lambretta TV175, Messerschmitt KR, and Honda 50 Sport.
Love the Lammy and the Messerschmitt… I’ll pass on the Honda, maybe have an MV Augusta instead… 🙂

Gang Girls video

Great vid by Vintage Hair Lounge shot on the streets of Southampton, featuring local scooter clubs, classic cars and burlesque performers! The song is a rather good version of Bang Bang by Miss Annie. Found Via Zeno’s Scooters website… a recently established up Lambretta and Vespa specialist also down Southampton way.

American girl in Italy, 1950’s

When I’m not riding a Lambretta, I’m either at home with the wife and kids, (usually doing homework), or at work being a graphic designer. One of the design blogs I visit, Design You Can Trust, recently featured some wonderful photography by an american photojouranlist Ruth Orkin.

A lot of her most arresting images come from the ’50s and ’60s, and there’s a lot of New York scenes, celebraties and musicians. Fabulous stuff, if you’re interested there’s a great online archive here. The image that caught my eye though was “American girl in Italy”, initially because of the rather cool couple of gents, astride a Model D. I thought, what a great image… how cool are all the guys in the image, so well dressed… and then you see the girls face. She’s obviously not happy with all the attention she’s getting. Looks pretty scared in fact. Maybe the good old days weren’t quite as rosy as we like to think of them.

EDIT/UPDATE: I’ve just found out that this is an iconic image, that nearly everybody in the world had seen! It’s even referenced on the Lambretta Wikipedia page. Oh well!

I do love old pics of scooters though, even better when the scooters are quite incedental to the image. If you’ve got any old Lambretta shots, I’d love to see them.

Before there was SatNav

LONG before GPS actually… Motorcyclist riding long distances either for work, leisure or (originally) military purposes used a system called a “Road Book”  which allowed you to ride without continually stopping to check maps. Basically a long scroll of paper that is manually, (or in the more sophisticated versions, mechanically – connected to the odometer) wound to show the distances between established reference points, I reckon this would be a pretty useful, if not a completely accurate/reliable tool. I like the wrist worn version too.

Any old sporting scooterists out there seen anything similar mounted to a scoot?

Vintage Lambretta Scrambling video

The Lambretta scrambler that is for sale on eBay that I posted previously comes with some cine film footage of scooter scrambling… which prompted me to do a little search on YouTube. I found this marvelous period video. Who knows… that eBay scrambler could even be on the vid.
I love the precision tools being used for the last minute adjustments… seemed you only really needed 3 tools… a hacksaw, a hammer, and a bigger hammer!

reminded me of this…

You wouldn’t want too many big hills!
Seriously though… wouldn’t you get a Vdub camper?

I know, I know, the QTvan is intended for mobility scooters. And it’s got a speed limit of 5mph. But If my Lambretta was pulling it, I doubt we’d be going much faster than that!
