New Lambrettas next May?

uite?A bit of a scoop here, thanks to a reader, Mark, who spotted this on the official Lambretta brand website.

The majority of the text below is copied from his original email to me…

Screen Shot 2015-11-24 at 09.45.04Remember, back in 2012, and then new Lambretta LN scooter?  There was an ongoing battle between the so-called Lambretta Consortium and Motom, who produced the LN.  As I’m sure you know the Consortium subsequently appear to have won the legal battle and the Lambretta revival turned out to be a very short lived affair. As an LN owner, I’ve always thought this was a great shame and, whilst it was never going to satisfy the purists, I thought that the LN deserved a chance to succeed – and not be strangled at birth.

Fast forward to November 2015 and there’s been a very interesting development over at the Lambretta Consortium’s website today regarding the prospect of another new Lambretta scooter.  According to the website, this is due to be launched on 4th May 2016.  See www.lambretta.com/scooters for more details.

As always lots of questions remain.  For example: what will the new Lambretta look like? Will it bear any resemblance to the LN or even be a freshly produced LN?  When will it be available to buy and how much will one cost?  What size engines will the new Lambretta have? Will it be designed by Alessandro Tartarini? The teaser SX style headlight and the sketch below hint to something quite LN’ish to me…

L'70On that official Lambretta brand website is a countdown calendar (I’ve pasted in a screenshot of it above), and (according to my calculations anyway) it’s counting down to the 3rd of May, 2016. There’s also a reference to “L’70 Models” Intriguing!

Of course, there’s been a lot of water under the bridge since 2012, notably the launch of the Scomadi, and many Lambrettisti would consider one of these of more authentic lineage to an LN, or whatever a L’70 is going to be… but we’ll see, we’ll see.

So, watch this space, I’ll have a sniff around and see if I can come up with any juicy info. And if you hear anything on the grapevine, let me know!

Scomadi Latest

Remember the rather tasty modern incarnation of the Lambretta GP, The Scomadi, that I wrote about way back in November last year, here?ScomadiWell there’s an update on the ScooterNova site. At the recent Morecambe Pre-Season Rally, PM Tuning held an open day at their shop, where a couple of Scomadi’s were on display, including a prototype of the forthcoming 50cc Turismo Leggera production model.ScomadiScomadi are now transitioning from making a few one offs, to full scale production… with manufacturing in Asia. Regualr reader and Lambrettista corespondent Ian pointed me in the direction of this site… Hanway Motors, who are either producing the Scomadi for Lambretta Innovations, or ripping them off…

Anyway, it’s all good in my humble opinion, and I’m a classic Innocenti man. The Scomadi is a modern version of the Italian original, in the same way as a modern Vespa, and the modern Vespa clones (LML etc) encapsulate the spirit of older classic Vespas. Alongside the LN, it can only be good for the whole Lambretta scene.

Scomadi pricing and delivery to finalised. Keep up to date on their website, or Facebook page.

Moldovan Lambretta Police

Moldovan Police LNsSince I announced, perhaps prematurely, the demise of the Lambretta LN, and the launch of the LamSport, I’ve been sent a link to the Official Moldova Government Ministry of Internal Affairs webpage, announcing that the Police had been presented with ten Lambretta LN’s for ‘daily activity in public places’.  Further info on the LN will follow, when I discover more!Moldovan Police LN fleet

eTropolis Reload, Q electric scooter and other oddities from EICMA

Spoiler alert. There’s NO Lambrettas in this post. Even the “new Lambrettas” are conspicuous by their absence from this years EICMA Motorcycle Showcase. And I don’t like modern scooters. With some very few exceptions. Sounding like a grumpy old man watching Top of the Pops (that ages me), where “It all sounds the same” They all pretty much look the same to me. All angles and plastic. Nah. I’ll stick to something classic and geared. But every now and then something comes along and makes me look twice. Last time it happened it was the Vespa 946. A stunner. Before that it was the back to basics charm of the Honda Zoomer, or Ruckus as the colonials would have it. And this years EICMA has thrown up a couple of interesting little oddities.

First is the all electric etropolis Reload… now metropolis (and the lower case “e” is deliberate btw), are a German company that make some distinctly average looking electric scooters. Which is probably not a bad thing for etropolis, or people that like modern scooters. Just for old farts like me that like proper scooters.ETROPOLIS-RELOAD-Laterale

But their new Reload takes the biscuit… and dunks it. It looks like someone has taken a modern scooter and hacksawed the arse off it… and then sawn any other extraneous bits of plastic off too. And as a result it looks, we’ll… rather good actually. In an awkward, ugly kind of way.

It’s electric, so the performance and range are going to be pretty appalling, but at least it looks, well, different. I like it. Until of course Etropolis go and load it up with more carriers and shopping baskets than a Tescos carpark. Oh well.RELOAD-BAULETTO-PORTA-MERCI-Laterale

Worse, for me than a generic modern scooter is a modern scooter trying to pass itself off as a retro classic. Vespa have managed to pull it off, just about (he says through gritted teeth), and are even improving. The new 946 and Primavera are very pretty scooters. The recent reinvented “Lambretta” LN, LJ and LT made a decent enough fist of it, capturing some of the spirit of the original Lambrettas… but unfortunately, despite good reviews, it appears they haven’t been able to challenge the likes of Piaggio. Peugeot Django peugeot-django-2014-20-8764-1383648863

Likely to be more successful, unfortunately, are these ‘neo-retro’ monstrosities  from Peugeot… just horrible, bloated and obese looking machines. In my opinion of course. Which is a shame, because they made some decent looking scooters back in the day… well the arse end looks ok, don’t think much of that fugly fender…Peugeot S57

Jumping back to electric scooters, and another honourable mention goes to another back to basics design the “Q” , a dutch design that is all about the frame. It kind of reminds me of the FIDO concept, I posted on my original “CrocodileJock” blog, way back.  Q Electric scooter

But what really caught my eye at EICMA this year wasn’t a scooter at all. It was a brace of bikes from someone who traditionally doesn’t even make bikes. British Car firm (and there’s not too many of those about) Caterham, (yes THAT Caterham) have launched their first ever motorcycles. And they are stunning. Really eye-catching radical designs… with three very different models, the beefy Brutus 750, (which can operate as a street bike, off road machine or even a SNOWMOBILE!!!) the “Classic E bike” an electric bike that harks back to the earliest days of motorcycling for it’s design inspiration, and the “Carbon E bike” another e-bike, but rather than looking like it’s come from some reimagined steampunk past, this one is straight from a science fiction future. Find out more, here. And there is a Lambretta link, of sorts… the designer behind the brute that is the Brutus is Alessandro Tatarini. If that name rings a bell, it may be because you recognise it from the Lambretta LN launch… yes, he was the designer behind that, too.  caterham-brutus-750caterham-classic-e-bike-03caterham-carbon-e-bike-01

I think they are absolutley stunning designs…  and while there not going to be everybody’s cup of Tetley, that’s kind of the point of them. An alternative two wheeler for people who “Think Different” and the stars of the show for me. That and the Scomadi’s of course.

Lambretta LN to be manufactured in Sicily?

Lambretta-girls

Rumours have reached me that the new, much debated Lambretta LN may soon be manufactured in the old FIAT factory in Termini Imerese, near Palermo in Sicily. The plant is currently owned by Chinese auto manufacturer Chery International who are in negotiations with the makers of the new Lambrettas, Motom Electronics.

What this means to UK Lambretta fans is uncertain… maybe one more tick for it being an authentic “Italian” scooter perhaps? I think it may be more influential factor in the home Italian market.

By the by, and apropos of nothing, the girls of Mansfield seem quite impressed with the looks of the new Lammies, for sale a the Two Wheel Centre in the town.

New 50cc Lambretta’s sneak onto the market

Screen_shot_2011-12-22_at_09

Ok, so I’ve been a little busy… (hence the lack of recent updates on here) but I have kept my eye on the happenings in the Lambretta world. Don’t quite know how I missed this (Although to be fair I did flag it up in November).

But it looks like the good people behind the new Lambretta LN have snuck out a couple of new models without telling me. From what I can gather there is three new models… the LS50 (Top pic, green flashes on the sidepanels)… which sneaks in at just under £3k (ouch!) and the (slightly) more affordable LT (middle pic – the red one) and LJ (last pic, headlight on the horncasting)… which come in at just under £2k. All three look like they will be available form February or March next year, but orders are being taken now. More facts, figures, roadtests etc.when I get them.

They are available from Eddy Bullet and other good scooter dealers.
(If you’re a dealer, and you are stocking them, know any more, or even want to let me have a test ride so I can write about them, get in touch and I’ll link to you).

Latest Lambretta shots from Milan show

A couple of images from the EICMA show in Milan… these red ones look like the “LS” model previously announced (I’ve heard that maybe LS stands for “Little Sister” although this migh just be a nickname), all one colour, and also a variant with the headlight on the horncast, as in the original LC’s, LD’s and LI Series 1’s. Seems a bit odd to be incorporating a design feature Lambretta abandoned in 1959, but that’s fashion for you… and there are plenty of modern scooters with the headlight in this position. True, it removes the problem of that big ugly headlight on the LN, but I don’t think it’s wholey successful design wise.

The final shot, below is back to ‘big brother’ the LN… but this time finished in silver and blue. I think this colourway might be for the 150cc model only, which is rumoured to be “for Italy only”. If the LN is going to be popular in the UK, I can see us wanting 150’s, 200’s, 250’s and even 300’s over here to thank you!

Lambretta LS news… and a new set of initials the Lambretta LJ…

Screen_shot_2011-11-09_at_17

Right, hope I haven’t got my wires crossed here, as I’m getting my news, in the original Italian, hot from the 2011 EICMA show in Milan. It looks like the 50cc Lambretta LS is due for an “early 2012” launch, (alongside larger 125 and 150cc versions) These will be sold alongside the LN 125 and 150. There is also talk of another model the LJ… although this may just be one of the variants of the LS with a 2-stroke 50cc engine (J for junior – Lambretta Junior? Just a guess).

The other news is that Lambretta have an electric LN in development… no specs yet but a 7kw engine and an estimated range of 100km… interesting… I wonder if they read this post about the electric model D conversion!

As ever, stay tuned, and when I know, you’ll know!
