I’ve had this pic knocking around in a folder for a while, shot during the filming of Starsky & Hutch – featuring a Serveta L150 Special in full NYPD livery. I’ve got another one of Huggy Bear fixing a Lambretta somewhere, just got to dig that out…

(Lambretta) Power to the People!

‘Wolfie’ Smith… in the classic TV comedy Citizen Smith on a S1. Apparently, Robert Lindsay may be making a comeback, wonder if he’ll still ride a Lammy? I wonder if actress Cheryl Hall will still be riding pillion?

Readers with good memories may remember that Wolfie later moved on to riding a GP in later episodes. Freedom for Tooting!

Mike Karslake on Pepple Mill

A bit of nostalgia for you… whenever I was off school back in the ’80’s…there wasn’t much telly on… I remember stuff like Crown Court and General Hospital… and then, at lunchtime, there was always Pebble Mill. Here’s an episode from the 80’s featuring Lambretta legend Mike Karslake, and some of his extensive Lambretta collection, including his Lambretta based fire engine and Wolfie’s Lambretta from Citizen Smith! He makes quite an entry on a Series 2 sidecar combination!

Vespa GL & 90SS vs. Lambretta SX200 & GP200

Lightweight, and factually incorrect (90mph from a 90SS – really? 90kph surely! – and it’s 90SS, not SS90…) piece on the now defunct Men & Motors Freesat channel. Francesca Robinson takes 4 classic scooters for a test drive, and sorry to mislead you in the title but it isn’t a straight shootout between the Vespas and the Lammies… but a cursory run through of each model. Some nice scoots, especially the SX “commonly known in the scooter world as Sex Appleal”, er, no, that was just an averting slogan. Despite all my carping on, I’ve seen worse, and although you won’t learn anything new, it’s worth a watch.

Luna Roadtest

No… I don’t speak Swedish (I’m thinking it’s Swedish, but I’m probably wrong), but I still found this little Luna roadtest rather watchable. Now, the Luna range doesn’t get much of a look in on this blog, which is a shame, because I really rather like them. They were a real back to basics scooter from Lambretta, back to the open frame principles of the original models A to D (I know there was a E and an F, but they pretty much petered out after the D). With this pared down, lightweight ethos and a space-age design from Bertone, where could they go wrong? Well, perhaps the Luna was just a bit too radical… ahead of it’s time, certainly a visual shock for aficionados of the clean curves of traditional Lambretta. But if you look at most modern small scooters, they’re a bit more Luna than GP. A superb design, a beautiful Bertone classic… born too soon?

Run… 90’s Scooter run documentary

A cut above the usual documentary about scooters… avoiding most of the clichés, and featuring Scootering magazine’s Sticky (whatever happened to him?), I don’t know how I missed this Channel 4 documentary ‘back in the day’ but I’ve got absolutely no recollection of seeing this before. Just watch it, it’s brilliant.

Dino’s at it again…

Dean Martin on a CentoBefore Austin Powers, there was Matt Helm… a spoof secret agent played by Dean Martin. A hard drinking, womanising, wisecracking american counterpart to 007, Dino played it strictly for laughs, and took every opportunity to get his leg over. On this occasion, he’s given up trying to kick start the LD, and got his leg over a J Range… And riding pillion he’s looking for somewhere to hold on!
