Book review: Mods! By Richard Barnes

Mods! by Richard BarnesI had this book back in the day, shortly after it was published. It became my bible… a revelation, an eyeopener, source of information, and the definitive reference work when it came to solving arguments. I bought it from the sadly missed ‘Books, Bits & Bobs’ from Kingston-upon-Thames, a cavernous place that sold a vast array of pin badges, patches, books, comics, posters and all sorts of other ephemera… and they weren’t picky, the mod stuff was intermingled with the 2tone, punk and heavy metal patches. It was across one road from the cinema where I first saw Quadrophenia, and across another from Jack Brendon’s, the clothes shop that sold an unlikely mix of Mod and Teddy Boy gear.

But I digress. Back to the book. Firstly, it’s worth buying for the pictures alone. And there are a ton of them. In fact most of the 128 pages are pics. And they’re great. A lot have been reproduced over the years in various other formats, and all over the internet, but there’s nothing like having them together as a collection. And they close inspection! There’s a load of scooter pics, as well as clothing, hairstyle and music shots. There are also a fair few reprints from 60’s newspapers, lots about the the seaside battles of Brighton, Margate, Clacton and the like. The text is insightful and although the author, Richard Barnes, was by his own admission not a mod himself, he was at the heart of the scene and saw it happening all around him. In fact, being a slightly removed, dispassionate observer has probably made this a stronger, and less biased book.

To finish my story, this book became a part of my library in the early eighties. Much read, much loved. And then, in a clearout it ended up in a charity shop. Doh! So, for many years, I didn’t have it. And then, my lovely wife got me a copy for Christmas. Only then I realised how much I had missed it!

I know more that most, that being a Lambretta rider doesn’t automatically make you a mod, and you may even hate the tag. But you’ll more than likely have more than a passing interest in the scene. A scene that has not only become a integral part of British subculture, and cultural history… been at the root of many revivals over the years, and passed on essential elements to many youth cultures that have followed it. Do yourself a favour, and add this book to your library.
It doesn’t tell the whole story of Mod as a movement, and there are other books that deal with other aspects of the scene. But this book was the original, and as mods will know, the original is often the best.

Lambretta. Not a ‘Kronenbourg’

SX150-PostcardViz’s “Roger’s Profanisaurus” (Surely one of the finest, most creative works in the english language) defines a Kroneburg (sic) thus ” A lady who appears from behind to be about ’16’, but reveals herself to be about ’64’ when she turns around “. Gentlemen, we’ve all been there. Well, there are scooters like that. Look ok from the back, look pants from the front (Peugeot S57 / Terrot VMS1 you know I’m talking about you), or vice-versa.

Luckily, riding a Lambretta, it’s something you don’t have to worry about. As this publicity shot shows. Ok, it’s an SX, but all Lambrettas look equally as good from the front and rear.

Bonus tip; to make your arse look slimmer  if you’ve put on a pound or two over the years… is to go for one of the more voluptuous models, like a S1 or 2. Works for me.

Lambretta Service Man

Lambretta Service Man
These occasionally come up on eBay, I think a (limited) batch were made to promote the launch of the Lambretta LN (I’ve decided it’s about time to drop the term “new” Lambretta) back in 2011. They sit about 33cm, or 13″ high. There’s one currently sitting on eBay for a shade over £50, with 3 days to go… make a nice Christmas pressie for somebody. Maybe your favourite Lambretta blogger 🙂

CORRECTION: A couple of readers have been in touch to let me know these were made for display in Lambretta Clothing stores, rather than the launch of the LN.

Lambretta Jubilee Art

Lambretta Jubilee BostonOne of the big events, for the sate side Lambrettisti, is the annual Lambretta Jubilee, a national, Lambretta only event organised by the Lambretta Club USA. Next year, it’s in Boston, Massachusetts.

Lambretta Jubilee Colorado

Now being the other side of the pond, I don’t know an awful lot more than that. But what I do know, is whoever designs their posters for them is doing an excellent job. I’ve found last years one from Colorado, and  these are real quality illustrations. So if you’ve got any more examples of these masterpieces of graphic art, give me a nod… It would be great to feature them on here. Maybe more importantly, if you know the talent behind the illustrations, please let me know, I’d love to give him / her the credit they are due!

EDIT / Update: Corey from The Bitter End Scooter Club, Ontario, Canada has given me a heads up on the artist. It’s by Glenn Reid, who has a website here. There are a fair few scoots features in his work, which will probably be as familiar to you, as they were to me when I saw them. Really lovely stuff, with an art deco travel poster vibe about them. Nice work Glenn, and cheers for the info Corey.

FURTHER EDIT / UPDATE: The Colorado Spring illustrations are by Adam Biddle, aka Adam Xyl, a Lambretta owner and rider, and a member of the Peak Scooter Club. Nice work Adam.

Another argument solved.

Paul Newman on a LambrettaWho’s the coolest Paul Newman, or Steve McQueen? It’s a tough call. I’d have always just about come down on the side of Mr McQueen, despite Mr Newman’s salad dressing, Cool Hand Luke, and his rendition of Plastic Jesus (check it out here if you haven’t heard it yet). But this is the final bit of evidence that swings it for Newman. And, until I see photographic evidence of McQueen on a Lammie, it’s definative. Paul Newman is the coolest. End of.

Jo Wood – The Lambretta Connection

Jo Wood Lambretta BrochureSo, this is something I vaguely knew… that Jo Wood, ex wife of Rolling Stone, Ronnie, was Mike Karslake’s daughter. One of those “You know who’s daughter she is… ” questions, you don’t know you know, until someone asks you. Well, they fill in all the details over at the excellent Scooternova blog. Check it out for the full story and some great pics. And find out if Jo still owns a Lammie today…

I’ve stripped out the pictures of the cool, skinny model dudes in mod influenced gear, and focused on the scooters. Personally, my memories of Gabicci are not as a mod brand, back in the day, but as a premier “Casual” (with a capital C) knitwear brand, worn alongside Lyle&Scot, Fila, Ellese, Farah and Lacoste. But then again, Casuals were basically that generations incarnation of Mods. (Discuss… can of worms opened!). Anyway, it’s one of those labels I would have avoided just on ideological grounds. But they’ve got some pretty decent looking clobber there, so if I was a few years younger, and a few stone lighter I’d give them a whirl. Probably.

Anyway, the scooters are courtesy of the New Originals scooter club, and they look bloody brilliant.

If it’s your cup of bovril, check out the Gabicci website here.

Didn’t know if this was Suitable…

Anyway, lets plough on… if you’ve got a posh “do” to go to, and your evening suit (or ‘Tux’ as the young folks call them, in the colonial style) is looking a little shabby, you might want to get hold of one of these fine Lambretta branded garments, from MyTuxedo.co.uk. There’s even a special package at £179.99 of Tuxedo, Shirt, Tie and Cufflinks, which is a bit of a bargain. I’ll stick to my kilt… but I’m very tempted by the Union Jack waistcoat, as, when I was a nipper, I was always a bit of a fan of the one sported by Tim Brooke-Taylor in the Goodies!Union Jack Waistcoat

Brettas, Badges and Blog…

20130417_161444Lambrettista is back after a short break (at the seaside with the family in sunny Broadstairs, Kent… highly recommended!) Now I’m back, I’m kicking off with a blog recommendation… check out the “You Don’t Need Speed” blog here… Scooters, music, style and more from Lambretta riding Pete, based in The Steel CIty… Sheffield. As well as putting together a very enjoyable blog, Pete can sort you out with enamel badges for you club or event… and has a nice stock of Punk, Ska and Mod button badges in stock here too. As well as the more commonly seen Trojan ones, I love the ones from the more esoteric ska record labels… Bigshot, Doctor Bird and Treasure Isle… bang on. Aces badge 3

Rockers. For Mods.

Lambretta RockerSo the headline was a bit obvious, and as Lambrettisti, we sometimes get a bit wary of all being tagged as mods… Anyway, on with the post. I’ve seen this sort of thing before… but as a much more generic type scooter. This is identifiably a Lammie. Made to order, to your spec, colour and model for a mere £140, this isn’t some piece of plastic tat… It’s an opportunity to indoctrinate your offspring (or niece, nephew, grandchild, godchild… whatever) in the way of the Lambrettista.

UPDATE: Gordon Robinson, who makes these has been in touch, there are some more pics, this time of an SX. Made to order, they take about a week to ten days from deposit to delivery. Lambretta SX Rocker 59627_386789491401968_1844803806_n 547044_386759164738334_1553254771_n

Rock on!
