I found this fella via the Lambretta Club de France Facebook page, he would appear to be;
A) French. B) A photographer C) Intersted in Lambrettas D) Also interested in young ladies with a ‘well turned ankle’, usually wearing stockings. Nothing wrong with that.

Nice images anyway… some great quirky shots of the scooters at the “3 eme rassemblement national Lambretta”. Check out his Facebook page here.

(I know the last one’s not a Lambretta).

Lambretta used in shoe ad…

Never mind where she got the shoes… where did he get the scoot?

If you want to make your ad sexy and stylish, just add a couple of pretty girls and a Lambretta. Nerver fails. Nice Lammy, used to flog footwear.

London Wasps SC Ride of Rememberance 2011

Img_8307

What a great day I had yesterday on the Wasps SC Ride of Remembrance… one of the highlights of my scootering year… no scrub that, one of the highlights of my year fullstop. A beautiful autumn day, with the sun shining through the misty light, London has never looked better. I’m told it was a lot better than last years weather where it was persisting down… well, when I got there, about 8.30 am, after a lovely ride up through Richmond Park and west London, there were four other scooters. When we left, I reckon it was closer to four hundred. Probably more.
After observing the two minutes silence at the Inner Circle of Regents Park, a run down Baker Street, onto Oxford Street and onto Marble arch, tourists and londoners alike stopping to smile, wave, take pictures and videos and smile…

After a quick regroup on Park Lane… and it was scoots as far as you could see forwards and backwards… it was onto the main event, the laying of wreaths at the Royal Artillery Memorial at Hyde Park Corner. Sweeping round HPC, we were waved at by the troops who’s been on parade, and that was a moment of real pride. After a while it was onto the Southern Cross pub on the Kings Road for libations, I skipped that as family matters need my attendance at home… and the queue for the bar and toilets was enormous. This is the third year Wasps SC have organised this event, last year it raised over £1,500 for The British Legion. And I’d be amazed if this year it wasn’t much more. What a day, thanks Wasps, I was honoured to attend and I’ll see you all next year.

Let’s get back to some PROPER Lambretta’s

Right, just in case anybody had stumbled across my blog for the first time and was worried it was all about NEW Lambrettas… here’s a nice bit of pure nostagia. Come September, a film from 1961, stars Rock Hudson, Gina Lollobrigida, Sandra Dee, Bobby Darin and a brace of rather fine Series 2 Lambrettas. I must admit, I’d never heard of this movie until it was flagged up on the rather good Vietnamese  “The Scooterist” blog. I’m not going to go into the ins and outs of the story, suffice it to say A) It’s got Rock Hudson etc. in it, B) It’s set in early sixties Italy and C) They ride Lambretta’s. Now what more could you want from a movie? Ms Lolobrigida, in typical Italian fashion even rides pillion ‘sidesaddle style’, It’s on my list of DVD’s to look a out for!

Lambrettista illustration

3dlambrettarendering-composites2

Far from an accurate 3d rendering, but just playing about with Adobe Illustrator’s 3d tools…

A funny thing happened on the way to the forum…

That’s an early model Lambretta. VERY early…

“Excuse me centurion… could you tell me the way to the nearest Lambretta dealer?”Reminded me of this (Sorry, no scooters).

More Lambretta art

Smallfishlambretta

Here’s a wonderful Lambretta illustration I stumbled across on Flickr, by smallish fish. There’s a load of rubbish scooter art out there, but this would look great on a canvas on any Lambrettista’s wall. Yvie is the talented designer behind the drawing, get in touch, and bung her a few quid, I’m sure she’ll be happy. And if you like her style, you can by her little book of nonsense poems, drawing and photographs, for the heady sum of £2.50 from here.

Lambretta Fine Art

Involuntarythoughtsii_mainHaribaabunaatesan01Haribaabunaatesan21

Bit of culture for you, Lambrettaphiles… some fine art Indian artist Haribaabu Naatesan. “Using mostly electronic waste (e-waste) from gadgets and gizmos like motherboards, floppy discs, CD drivers, cellphones, CDs, etc, artist Haribaabu Naatesam reassembles them together to create incredible works of art. Aiming to liberate waste from its lowly condemned position, Naatesam breathes new life into junk pieces turning them into everything from birds and crabs to shoes and transportation.” Call me shallow, but I like it ‘cs it’s got a scooter in it! 🙂

Lambrettas on the Lingotto – the roof of the (former) FIAT factory

7-1

This is one of my dreams… racing my (extremely slow) Series round the track on the roof of the iconic former FIAT factory in Turin.

Probably most well known in the UK for it’s brief appearance in the Italian Job, The Lingotto is an incredible work of modernist architecture. It was more than a factory, more of an enourmous machine for making cars… raw materials coming in on the ground floor, being built on s production line that progressed up the building before emerging, finished onto the rooftop test track. Brilliant.
Logo_lingottos_nored_rgb
No longer a car factory… now a business centre / concert hall / theatre / art gllery / shopping mall / hotel / university… (you might start to get an idea how BIG this thing is.
Redbull
Italian owners of classic scooters had the chance to take thier scoots up the famous spiral ramp and  put their machines through their paces on this classic track… thanks to a famous energy drink. The Red Bull  Special Lingotto took place on the 25th of September (apparently it’s the third time they’ve done it), and awarded prizes for creativity as well as speed. I’d love to do that.
Found this story over at Italian site motoblog.it, which is also where I nicked the pictures from. Sorry that it appears to be mainly V•spas!

American girl in Italy, 1950’s

5671969042_f27c401573_b

When I’m not riding a Lambretta, I’m either at home with the wife and kids, (usually doing homework), or at work being a graphic designer. One of the design blogs I visit, Design You Can Trust, recently featured some wonderful photography by an american photojouranlist Ruth Orkin.

A lot of her most arresting images come from the ’50s and ’60s, and there’s a lot of New York scenes, celebraties and musicians. Fabulous stuff, if you’re interested there’s a great online archive here. The image that caught my eye though was “American girl in Italy”, initially because of the rather cool couple of gents, astride a Model D. I thought, what a great image… how cool are all the guys in the image, so well dressed… and then you see the girls face. She’s obviously not happy with all the attention she’s getting. Looks pretty scared in fact. Maybe the good old days weren’t quite as rosy as we like to think of them.

EDIT/UPDATE: I’ve just found out that this is an iconic image, that nearly everybody in the world had seen! It’s even referenced on the Lambretta Wikipedia page. Oh well!

I do love old pics of scooters though, even better when the scooters are quite incedental to the image. If you’ve got any old Lambretta shots, I’d love to see them.
