I don’t normally post Vespa’s. This is a Lambretta blog! But this I spotted a pic of this gorgeous machine on Twitter, and found a few more online. And it’s a superb looking machine, completley up my strasse. It’s for sale on eBay at the moment, in Germany.
I don’t know anything about it, other than it is called a “Sei Giorni” Race Replica… Now, my limited Italian translates “Sei Giorni” as Six Days, and that automatically get me thinking of the Scottish 6 Day Trials, but I may be completely off beam here. There were probably a ton of 6 Day Competitions back in the day. Any Vespa enthusiasts / knowledgable scooter sport historians on here can shed any more light? Please let me know in the comments.

Jim from the Lambretta club of South Africa sent through some fantastic pics of their 2015 Afrophenia 2015 tour, which took place in September last year.
The route took them from Port Elizabeth to Cape Town, going through Jeffreys Bay,
Knysna, Oudtshoorn, Barrydale, Hermanus, Stellenbosch and finally Cape Town.
In total 11 scooters started the trip, 3 Lambretta’s and 8 Vespa’s plus back
up vehicle and scoot.
The Lambretta’s were:
TV 175 S2 – Green and chrome – owner Jim
TV 175 S2 – light blue – owner Derry
TV200 – blue and white – owner Carlos
The distance covered was approximately 700 miles or 1200 km’s, over a ‘leisurely’ 9 days… an epic trip, with awesome scenery, great mates and memories that will last forever. The pictures and video will give you some idea of what they experienced.
I don’t know exactly what’s doing on here… but there are some clues. Firstly the location is clearly San Fransisco… and specifically the Golden Gate Bridge. I wonder if any of my US readers remember the Berkley Scooter Shop? On the front of one the TV’s there’s a badge for “Al (Second name unreadable)* San Francisco” is also the pic of Warren Carver… who, his badge is “Road Captain” of the Pioneer Scooter Club, SF. Though I reckon he really wanted to be in the California Highway Patrol… The event looks like some sort of protest… I’m guessing from the pic of the dude on the Vespa, and the signage, it’s something to do with banning motorcycles from certain roads. There’s a couple of pics of people looking at maps trying to figure out alternative routes.
*It’s Al Fergoda, thanks for the info, regular contributor Corey, from Scooter Fix! on his Facebook page there is an impressive collection of dealer decal imagery that has a great pic of the Al Fergoda sticker. And from a little bit of internet research it seems Al Fergoda was a big name in North California, back in the day, as well as being a Lambretta dealer, also specialising in BSA, Norton and eventually Yamaha marques.

If the scenery doesn’t make you wish you were riding it with them, well there’s something wrong with you! Thanks Andy. Maybe I’ll get out there and join you one year!
Ok it’s in German, put let the pictures do the talking. And I don’t know about you, but German is one of those languages that I can pic up the gist of if you pay attention. Unfortunately the focus seems to be on the Vepsa on show,including some rather odd Vespa mopeds, and a nutter doing some quite impressive stunt riding. There is a glimpse of a rather lovely S1 with a trailer, a really stunning skinhead / suedehead style skelly… really, really nicely done that… and a rather tasty race replica GP with a nice Martini paint job.
What surprises me more is the scale and feel of the event… it’s got the feel of something like the Ideal Home Exhibition… and a really mainstream audience.
Love this old pic I found online… Hampton Hill Post Office is just over the River Thames from me, and the last time I rode past it, hadn’t changed much! I’ll have to “streetview it” and see if it’s changed…
Lightweight, and factually incorrect (90mph from a 90SS – really? 90kph surely! – and it’s 90SS, not SS90…) piece on the now defunct Men & Motors Freesat channel. Francesca Robinson takes 4 classic scooters for a test drive, and sorry to mislead you in the title but it isn’t a straight shootout between the Vespas and the Lammies… but a cursory run through of each model. Some nice scoots, especially the SX “commonly known in the scooter world as Sex Appleal”, er, no, that was just an averting slogan. Despite all my carping on, I’ve seen worse, and although you won’t learn anything new, it’s worth a watch.

Well, after a couple of posts about wooden Vespa’s… I thought it was time for a cardboard Lambretta!
It’s kind of hard to believe, but this beauty is made out of two things only. Cardboard and glue. And that’s it. No wooden frame. No hidden supporting metal structure. It’s one of the self imposed restrictions artist Chris Gilmour adheres to when creating his art. And it art, of the highest quality in my opinion. There’s something about taking cardboard, that humblest of materials, so often overlooked and discarded and creating something beautiful. Something that makes you look afresh at the original objects too. I don’t know if I’ve got Chris’s vision… but that’s my personal take. And it’s not just scooters and other vehicles (although they are my favourites) … Chris has created everything from wheelchairs to typewriters… microscopes to lifesize sculptures of Queen Victoria. This is a first. I generally don’t post pictures of Vespas. I’ve got nothing against them, other than a general low-level bitterness that out of the two GREAT Italian scooter marques, Piaggio’s Vespa survived and the clearly superior Lambretta didn’t. And I’m not a “scootist”. Some of my best friends ride Vespas. In fact, Vespas are (probably) my second favourite scooter marque. But they are all over the web, and there’s some great sites covering both (try Scooternova) or that cater to the poor deluded souls who actually prefer Italy’s second best scooter (my personal favourite, being this one; Vespamore). And, much as I may have huge gaps in my Lambretta knowledge (I literally learn something new nearly every day), I am a complete ignoramus when it comes to the Vespa. I’ve never owned one*, and I’ve never even ridden one. So I can’t really write abut them.
Anyway, this long, unfocused and rambling diatribe is needs to get back on track. Here we go. I generally don’t post pictures of Vespas. But occasionally, I come across a picture so good it’s hard to resist the urge to post it. Above is one such shot.
So… here’s the deal. Should I post the occasional pics of a Vespa, or are they truly off limits on a Lambretta site. This is your chance to vote, below.
*I nearly bought a GS160 before I saw my current Lambretta – this would have been a very different blog!
