I’m not usually one to post about modern scooters, with a few notable exceptions (Honda Zoomer/Ruckus some ItalJets, and *gasp* the forthcoming Vespa 946 ) I’m generally not a fan. They’re either pretty generic… or poor retro style rip offs of classic lines of Lambrettas and Vespas. But here’s something that looks like it’s come straight from the futre… and being electric, it probably does herald the future for scooters. Unlike (most) other electric vehicles, this one seems to have the performance to back up it’s looks too… Performance comparable with a 125cc Petrol Scoot.
Though not for me, I like my scooters a bit more traditional… but if I were a young ‘un… maybe this is the sort of thing that would turn my head.

RIght, so the blog has seen a dearth of updates lately… largely due to work and family commitments. In fact, this is my first post of 2013, which makes my personal target of at least one good post a week seem little a little poor.
Anyway… on to the good news. With the worst of the winter behind us (surely!!) and the days getting longer, if not that much warmer… the 2013 scootering season is kicking off. One of my plans for teh blog is to have a calendar of events, and here’s one for your dairy to start things off. It’s not until the middle of June so there’s plenty of time to make arrangements!
One of the reasons I’m posting this is that I designed the flyer… well, after all that’s my day job. BTW, if you run a club and want a logo, t-shirt or flyer done… drop me a line. Or if you’ve got an event you want publised, do likewise. email crocodilejock@gmail.com
My mate Iain, now resident in the beatiful Scottish borders rides with the Lowlanders, and it’s a part of the world I know reasonably well… having relatives in the wonderfully named village of Ecclefechan. I’ve holidayed near Portpatrick too… and it’s a great little harbour town… but they won’t know what’s hit them when the scooters arrive! So if you fancy a run away from some of the more usual destinations this summer bear it in mind.
There. First post of 2013 done. Wasn’t hard was it? More to come soon. Promise.
Badass modified LD… Somehow somebody has managed to shoehorn a 450cc, race tuned Banshee lump into a Lambretta LD frame. And then ride it. On the road. In the rain. Hope the brakes have been uprated! Loving the twin pipes… and the noise it makes!
Thanks to my Twitter buddy and fellow Series 2 rider Stuart @stuartbumford for the heads up.
From NYC to Rockaway beach, beautifully shot. Looks like a fun day fellas. Nice soundtrack too.
A bit of a palette cleanser after that horrible Pato in the last post… there’s a lovey replica of a Model D racer for sale over at Car & Classic. Not a genuine racer, but built on a genuine D frame, with, what looks like to me, a good eye for detail. Now there are those of you who’ll think D’s should only be seen in that drab olive green / khaki / pale grey colour they were originally sold in… and not messed about with in any way… but I love this “corsa” look…
While I’m on the subject, I’ve seen a D repainted in GP Orange and it was a revelation, the machine looked almost modern, and you could see a definite lineage between it and a Luna. Concours? No. Original? No. Desirable? Yes, to me anyway. What do you think? Go on, don’t be shy…
If you’re interested, it’s going for £3,750 (ONO)… which I think is a bit of a bargain, personally. Something a bit different, I reckon it would be pretty rideable on todays roads, and a real head turner at rallies.
If you’re interested, here’s the link.
I’d seen this video a while ago… but it’s worth a post if only for it’s “Mr Chummley-Warner” style narration!
We’ve all been there, garageful of scooters (I wish!) and a nagging missus… when you going to get rid of those bloody things… you never ride all of them… Well one guy (it’s got to be a bloke really) is selling his collection of Scoots and Microcars on eBay. 47 of them. That rather puts the Lambretta collection I posted previously fade into insignificance.
There’s a huge collection of what I, rather patriosingly, call “oddballs”… everything from Bernadet’s to Zundapps, and everything inbetween. Well, nearly everything… there are a couple of famous marques, notably Lambretta and V*spa, missing from this collection. I bet a) he doesn’t like V*spa’s, and b) he’s keeping his Lambrettas :). (Although there is an NSU Lambretta in the mix) Many of the scoots are sidecar combinations and/or trailers. There are even a couple of microcars in the mix, a Goggomobile Coupé and a Goggo Limousine. I’m uncertain as to what a Goggo Limousine is (although I’m guessing limousine is probably overegging it somewhat), but a Goggo Coupé is one of the prettiest microcars made, in my ever so humble.
So if you fancy a Czeta 502, a IWL Berlin, a Maicoletta or MV Augusta… or one of the 43 other scoots, stick your bids in here. There’s a fairly decent British contingent in there; a brace of Triumphs, a Velocette and Osa. You’ll need fairly deep pockets though, as it’s currently sitting at € 46,000 Update: it’s up to € 52,000 and I don’t think that’s STILL anywhere near the reserve. And no, he doesn’t want to split them.
I reckon this lot will be snapped up by a transport museum somewhere… probably in the states.
Full details are worth checking out, even if you’re not going to put a bid in!
I may just buy an extra lottery ticket this weekend. You never know.
Told you there’d be scooters. Amazing vid from one of the lucky few who rode around the Olympic Stadium on Sunday night.
I’ve not written much about scooter racing on this blog, is something I’ve always wanted to do. The guys that push Lambrettas and Vespas to their max on the track are a special kind of rider (the word nutters was actually the first one that came to mind). In fact the only sporting event I’ve covered is an old Scooter Scrambling event from the sixties and the Red Bull Lingotto Special, where classic scoots race around the roof of the old FIAT factory in Turin. That vid is worth a watch if you haven’t seen it yet!
But here’s a scooter sport that I’ve never come across before. Ape cross. Watch the video, which explains it better than I could. I know Ape’s are Vespas… but I’ve always had a soft spot for them.(See my Tuxi post) If there is a Lambro version of this sport, I’d love to see it!
