Vespas
This is a first. I generally don’t post pictures of Vespas. I’ve got nothing against them, other than a general low-level bitterness that out of the two GREAT Italian scooter marques, Piaggio’s Vespa survived and the clearly superior Lambretta didn’t. And I’m not a “scootist”. Some of my best friends ride Vespas. In fact, Vespas are (probably) my second favourite scooter marque. But they are all over the web, and there’s some great sites covering both (try Scooternova) or that cater to the poor deluded souls who actually prefer Italy’s second best scooter  (my personal favourite, being this one; Vespamore). And, much as I may have huge gaps in my Lambretta knowledge (I literally learn something new nearly every day), I am a complete ignoramus when it comes to the Vespa. I’ve never owned one*, and I’ve never even ridden one. So I can’t really write abut them.

Anyway, this long, unfocused and rambling diatribe is needs to get back on track. Here we go. I generally don’t post pictures of Vespas. But occasionally, I come across a picture so good it’s hard to resist the urge to post it. Above is one such shot.

So… here’s the deal. Should I post the occasional pics of a Vespa, or are they truly off limits on a Lambretta site. This is your chance to vote, below.

*I nearly bought a GS160 before I saw my current Lambretta – this would have been a very different blog!

Brooklynbretta used to be the place to take your vintage scoot for repairs in NYC. Sadly, it’s gone now, closing it’s doors in 2009. But what remains is pretty cool; this fun vid of a scooter chase through the streets of NYC. The resolutions not great, but the content is.

Assembled from steam pressed bamboo… this has got to be the ultimate in sustainable transport. If you like your scooters made from wood, that is. I suppose it’s better than plastic. Personally, I prefer this one… even though it’s a V•spa!

Scomadi TL50… First pics

Scomadi TL50Looking unsurprisingly like it’s bigger siblings, here’s some shots of the 50cc Scomadi Turismo Leggera I first mentioned a couple of posts ago. More info to follow when I get it!

First impressions? Nice lines. Some delicate smoothing to the classic GP panels. The indicators are subtly incorporated, although my first though was they look like they’re upside down. My biggest problem with the bike is how it sits a little high… which will be a function of the 12″ wheels. It just looks like it needs to take a breath, and relax down onto it’s wheels an inch or two.  But I’m being picky. overall, this looks like a very classy, refined scooter. And miles ahead of any other 50cc bike on the market. Nice work.

EDIT: here are a couple more shots, taken from the Scomadi Facebook page. The big question everybody wants to know is “How Much?” I’ll let you know when I do!

Blue Ashtray… a close-up

Back On Target?

Remember On Target, the independent scooter magazine from a few years ago? I must admit, it was never on my radar, but some of you will know it. Well here’s a video to fill you in on it… and the reason I’m posting it, is I’ve heard on the grapevine that there’s the possibility of a relaunch in 2014. While I think Scootering and Classic Scooterist Scene do a good job, on the whole, I’m all for a bit of competition in the magazine market, so good luck to the fellas. I’ll keep you posted if I find out more.

Chrome S1“Chrome won’t get you home” is the saying amongst the Lambrettisti, and I must admit, I’m not as much in love with the plating as I was back in the day. However, when it’s done right, it still looks boss. Here’s a Series 1 where it is. Done right that is.

Future Shock Lambretta ChopperCards on the table… Choppers ain’t my thing. When you put the list of various custom scooter categories together (and I should do that one day), Choppers would come close to the bottom. For me.

Saying all that, once in a while a chopper comes along that is just SO good that you can’t ignore it. It imbeds itself in your brain, and comes to define the category. Future Shock is the machine that does this… a completely radical, stunningly executed concept that has become, well, iconic. With numerous appearances in the scootering press over the years, you can’t help having noticed it, and admired the vision, time and artistry that has gone into it. Now you can own it. It’s on eBay now, sitting (at time of typing at a tad over £4k). Here’s the eBay link.
