Dani got in touch to let me know about his new venture. With his pal Thomas he has set up Loco Wheels –  a Lambretta tours business in sunny Mallorca.

Dani & Thomas have been into Lambrettas since the 90’s and are now taking the big step of turning their passion into a business.
Currently, they have four classic Lambrettas they’ve loving restored, and a couple of brand new Scomadi 125’s.

The idea is to take you on a guided tour of hidden Mallorca… going off the beaten track and “getting  lost” in the labyrinth of  Mallorcan back roads. You’ll  discover the secret places tourists never see, and only the locals know about. You stop whenever takes your fancy to enjoy the culture and scenery.

As well as knowing which ‘Lammies friendly’ roads (and tracks!) to ride they also know the best places to sample typical local dishes, so you get a real taste of Mallorca in more ways than one! Your day ends back at Loco Wheels HQ for a drink and a chat.

If you like the idea of riding a Lambretta, on a beautiful Mediterranean island, in the sunshine, (let’s be honest, what’s not to like) check out their (very cool) Loco Wheels Website, or their Facebook page.

The final rideout…

dsc00132We often don’t like to think about our own mortality, but there comes a time in your life when you start going to as many funerals as weddings. And we probably all know somebody in the scootering scene who has passed on, usually far too early.

dsc00119Although obviously sad affairs, the best funerals can be wonderful too, especially when you celebrate a life, and the passions of the deceased. What better way for someone that loved their scoots to make the final journey in a Lambretta powered hearse?

dsc00129To quote the websiteOur unique Scooter Hearse draws together an authentic Series 3 Lambretta professionally converted to a trike by a master coach builder, the same craftsman also fabricated the Hearse that is pulled behind. Beautifully combined this set up pays complete respect to the deceased, a person who had a love for the scooter, the scene that surrounds it, a scene that to those outside can sometimes seem extraordinary but for those in the know is something magical.”

Personally, I can’t think of a better way to celebrate the life  of a scooterist. That number plate’s good too.

Serious ladies

By the expressions on their faces, whatever race was about to start wasn’t ‘just for fun’… these girls were taking things pretty seriously!

I don’t know a lot about this shot, but it’s great… I just had to reach into my ’emergency stash’ as I couldn’t leave a Vespa, no matter how beautiful, sitting as the first post on a Lambretta blog. Nothing against our Wasp riding brethren, but it’s just not right.

There’s some lovely scooters including an S-Type (Ridden by a Bev?) but I think the old D still looks ‘competitive’ …although the rider seems less professionally attired! There’s legshield banners for The Innocents Lambretta Club Kent, and TheLambretta Club London. If you can add any more info, or identify any of the participants, please do!

I love old pics like this, and if you’ve got any you would like to share on the blog, get in touch and we’ll get ’em up.

Oldies but Goldies…

The Golden Special, along with it’s slightly less impressive ‘sister’ The Silver Special was launched in 1965 by Innocenti to give the LI Special range a bit of a boost. I’ve never been a huge fan of the Golden Special, which is just my personal taste, I don’t think the colour sets off the lines of machine as well as the some of the other combos. I’m just not a gold kinda guy, too blingy for me. Don’t like the gold iPhone, don’t like gold taps, I don’t even reckon Gold is Spandau Ballet’s best song.

But if you’ve got a taste for the finer things in life, there are a couple of Golden Specials on eBay. They’re not mega rare, but they are far from run-of-the-mill.

The first one is in it’s original paint, a wonderful, unrestored example, straight form Italy. It would really benefit from being kept ‘as is’ or a conserved restoration. It’s on eBay, here.

The second has taken the Golden Special, and added gold. Gold plated engine parts and brightwork. It looks very classy next to that well preserved ’80’s Vespa (a Cosa? I’m no expert!) If it floats your boat, check it out on eBay
