New Lambrettas next May?

uite?A bit of a scoop here, thanks to a reader, Mark, who spotted this on the official Lambretta brand website.

The majority of the text below is copied from his original email to me…

Screen Shot 2015-11-24 at 09.45.04Remember, back in 2012, and then new Lambretta LN scooter?  There was an ongoing battle between the so-called Lambretta Consortium and Motom, who produced the LN.  As I’m sure you know the Consortium subsequently appear to have won the legal battle and the Lambretta revival turned out to be a very short lived affair. As an LN owner, I’ve always thought this was a great shame and, whilst it was never going to satisfy the purists, I thought that the LN deserved a chance to succeed – and not be strangled at birth.

Fast forward to November 2015 and there’s been a very interesting development over at the Lambretta Consortium’s website today regarding the prospect of another new Lambretta scooter.  According to the website, this is due to be launched on 4th May 2016.  See www.lambretta.com/scooters for more details.

As always lots of questions remain.  For example: what will the new Lambretta look like? Will it bear any resemblance to the LN or even be a freshly produced LN?  When will it be available to buy and how much will one cost?  What size engines will the new Lambretta have? Will it be designed by Alessandro Tartarini? The teaser SX style headlight and the sketch below hint to something quite LN’ish to me…

L'70On that official Lambretta brand website is a countdown calendar (I’ve pasted in a screenshot of it above), and (according to my calculations anyway) it’s counting down to the 3rd of May, 2016. There’s also a reference to “L’70 Models” Intriguing!

Of course, there’s been a lot of water under the bridge since 2012, notably the launch of the Scomadi, and many Lambrettisti would consider one of these of more authentic lineage to an LN, or whatever a L’70 is going to be… but we’ll see, we’ll see.

So, watch this space, I’ll have a sniff around and see if I can come up with any juicy info. And if you hear anything on the grapevine, let me know!

Lambretta LN ‘Pure Smithy’ Dealer Special

I haven’t posted anything about the LN or it’s sibling modern Lambrettas* recently, as they’re not really my bag… and there hasn’t been anything new to report. I don’t know how they are selling, and I certainly haven’t seen one on the road, but I wish them well. If the marketing department at Motom* had any imagination, they’d sign up a Lambretta blogger, and let him (or her) have one for an extended test drive. Say six months. By the way… on the last count The Lambrettista blog is read in more than 70 countries. Just saying.

Lambretta LN Pure Smithy media-2 media-3 media media-4Anyway… at  but I thought this was quite interesting. Had to look twice at this LN on eBay. I thought it was an official Paul Smith licensed product, but it’s clearly a fairly clever knock off. I wouldn’t be totally surprised if Mr Smith had been involved, as he was allegedly a mod as a young man, and his work retains a certain ‘mod aesthetic’… but if he had it would have been all over the papers. Another marketing opportunity missed? There I go, off on a tangent again. Back to the original point of this post, which was, that the LN is now starting to appear in different incarnations, customised, much as dealers would customise ‘proper’ Lambrettas back in the day… I’ve no particular opinion on whether this is a good, or bad thing… it’s just interesting. Mildly. Well, I thought so. If it floats your boat, and you’ve got a spare £3k knocking around, you can get one here. And they’ll give you a fiver change. It’s being sold by the Pure Group, in Harrogate if you don’t do eBay.

*Motom Electronics Group are one of the claimants of the Lambretta name. There’s a trademark/license document here that explains it all in legalese. My thoughts can be found on this site if you stick Lambretta LN into the “handy searchbar” (that’s one for the “stuffyoushouldknow” podcast listeners).

Lambretta LJ50

I posted a while ago, that in addition to the 125 and 150 LN & LS models, there looked like there was going to be a 50cc LJ model. Well, anyone that has been watching eBay will tell you, there is. Well, ctually there are two models, The LJ, which like the original LI Series 1, had it’s headlight on the corncasing, and the LT which has it’s headlight more conventially mounted.

I haven’t got a lot of spec on these, but here’s what I do have.

Engine type: 2 stroke
Displacement:
49cc
Cooling System: Air
Fuel System: Carburettor
Transmission: Automatic
Front Suspension: Telescopic Fork
Rear Suspension: Unit Swing Arm
Front Brake: Disc
Rear Brake: Drum
Front Tyre: 110/70-12
Rear Tyre: 120/70-12

Price is expected to be around £1899.00

Check it out, and reserve yours if you fancy one, on eBay here.

New 50cc Lambretta’s sneak onto the market

Screen_shot_2011-12-22_at_09

Ok, so I’ve been a little busy… (hence the lack of recent updates on here) but I have kept my eye on the happenings in the Lambretta world. Don’t quite know how I missed this (Although to be fair I did flag it up in November).

But it looks like the good people behind the new Lambretta LN have snuck out a couple of new models without telling me. From what I can gather there is three new models… the LS50 (Top pic, green flashes on the sidepanels)… which sneaks in at just under £3k (ouch!) and the (slightly) more affordable LT (middle pic – the red one) and LJ (last pic, headlight on the horncasting)… which come in at just under £2k. All three look like they will be available form February or March next year, but orders are being taken now. More facts, figures, roadtests etc.when I get them.

They are available from Eddy Bullet and other good scooter dealers.
(If you’re a dealer, and you are stocking them, know any more, or even want to let me have a test ride so I can write about them, get in touch and I’ll link to you).

Latest Lambretta shots from Milan show

A couple of images from the EICMA show in Milan… these red ones look like the “LS” model previously announced (I’ve heard that maybe LS stands for “Little Sister” although this migh just be a nickname), all one colour, and also a variant with the headlight on the horncast, as in the original LC’s, LD’s and LI Series 1’s. Seems a bit odd to be incorporating a design feature Lambretta abandoned in 1959, but that’s fashion for you… and there are plenty of modern scooters with the headlight in this position. True, it removes the problem of that big ugly headlight on the LN, but I don’t think it’s wholey successful design wise.

The final shot, below is back to ‘big brother’ the LN… but this time finished in silver and blue. I think this colourway might be for the 150cc model only, which is rumoured to be “for Italy only”. If the LN is going to be popular in the UK, I can see us wanting 150’s, 200’s, 250’s and even 300’s over here to thank you!

Lambretta LS news… and a new set of initials the Lambretta LJ…

Screen_shot_2011-11-09_at_17

Right, hope I haven’t got my wires crossed here, as I’m getting my news, in the original Italian, hot from the 2011 EICMA show in Milan. It looks like the 50cc Lambretta LS is due for an “early 2012” launch, (alongside larger 125 and 150cc versions) These will be sold alongside the LN 125 and 150. There is also talk of another model the LJ… although this may just be one of the variants of the LS with a 2-stroke 50cc engine (J for junior – Lambretta Junior? Just a guess).

The other news is that Lambretta have an electric LN in development… no specs yet but a 7kw engine and an estimated range of 100km… interesting… I wonder if they read this post about the electric model D conversion!

As ever, stay tuned, and when I know, you’ll know!

So the LN’s launched… but what’s happened to the LS?

Lambretta_verde
P013_1_00

So the one new Lambretta has launched, and there’s been a bit of buzz around it… but one question I’ve heard asked around the interwebs is “Are they going to make a 50cc version?”.
That would open up the Lambretta market considerably…

Well, when the LN was first announced, there was another model announced at the same time… Pictured here (in white and green) the “LS”. Smaller, lighter with similar, but subtly different styling the LS was due to be available in 150, 125 and importantly 50cc variants. Full specs

here<http://lambrettamotorcycles.com/ls_50.html>

I’ve reposted a pic of the LN next to it (it’s the blue and white one!) so you can see the styling differences, and the ‘family’ feel to the range.

I’ve heard nothing about this model for about six months, and my guess would be that “CLAG International Ltd.” the consortium behind the new Lambretta(s) are testing the reaction to the LN, before launching a second model.

As ever, stay tuned and I’ll let you know if I here anything.

LN vs LX

Belgian website vroom.be pits the new Lambretta LN against the Vespa LX… The Lammie (is it right to call it a Lammie yet? Has it earned it’s spurs?) wins point for Style, Image and Handling, loses them for practicality and finish…

Downloaded from another site related to the new Lambretta LN, lambrettaweb.com . It’s nice to see the traditon of using pretty lady to sell scooters hasn’t entirely died out.

There’s a cool little video on the landing page… although I think it would have been better if they didn’t spell out that the Italian for wasp is Vespa… and left that as a little ‘in-joke’… I do amire the ballsiness of taking on the “auld enemy”. Quite ambitious!
