Lambretta Helicak

800px-helicak3

An unusual Lambretta/Rickshaw type contraption from Indonesia, these Helicaks (because they look like a Helicopter, presumably) are one of the odder Lambretta conversions I’ve seen.

Helicak

They were introduced in Jakarta in the early ’70s, but by the late ’80s were deemed unsafe, as in an impending accident, the drivers tended to abandon ship, leaving the passengers trapped in the fibreglass cab to take the brunt of the collision.

LD BOGOF

Screen_shot_2011-07-14_at_15
Used to seeing BOGOF’s (Buy one, get one free) down at Tesco’s on cans of beans and the like, but here’s the opportunity to buy one classic Lamby and get another free.
I wish I had a spare Series 2… (actually, I wish I had a spare Series 1, I’ve got some plans drawn up for that… anybody got a straight wreck they want taken off their hands?)
Anyway back to the LD’s… here’s they are on eBay. Let me know if you buy ’em!

Fresh shots of the Lambretta LN… in the wild

Ln125z

Well, maybe not the wild. Belgium. But you know what I mean. I know the jury’s still out on this one, and I’ve got stick in some quarters for defending it in the past, but I think the design at least hangs together. Until, of course you get to the shot of the LN next to an original 150 Special, and it just looks fugly and bloated. But then again, stick a Vespa GS 160 next to PX… you get my point. And some of the detailing is pretty good, lovin’ the Lambretta branded grips. Lots of detail, and comment on the two sites I’ve “borrowed” the images from, in French, but that’s what Google Translate is for (even better, use Google Chrome, and it automatically translates it for you). UPDATE: If you are in the Bolton area, I’m reliably informed you can get hold of the new Lambretta at MotoCentre. Website here.

Scooter Commuter

A great ‘look at life’ video from 1962… it’s a great primer on scooter history too. Found this via Johnny  Scoots tumblr blog.

TC on an LD

2605_235a

Love this picture of the late, great Tony Curtis on an LD. That’s the actor Tony Curtis, not my good mate, the equally great, and thankfully not late Tony Curtis.
Who incidentally is also a Lambretta aficionado. Anyway, I’m getting sidetracked here, the main pint of this post is to find out what movie this picture was from… any film buff Lambretta lovers out there?
Answers in a postcard, or, and this is probably easier, in the comments.

UPDATE:

Checking the IMCDB (Internet Movie Car Database) I’ve found the film this still is from – a movie called “Paris – When It SIzzles” from 1964, a film I can’t believe I haven’t seen as it stars, amongst others; William Holden, Audrey Hepburn, Noël Coward, Marlene Dietrich and Frank Sinatra. It’s on my ‘to watch’ list!

Caterham 7 Lambretta Special Edition

28833_115142

I’m a bit late to the party with this one, but here goes. As branding tie-ins goes, I don’t think Lambretta has always got it right over the last few years, but occasionally, they hit the nail right on the head.

28833_115143

This is a link up between two iconic brands… Lambretta & Caterham, and I think they both come out of it winners.

The union jack livery, which could have looked oh so cheesy, has been applied with a bit of a twist which really works well, and it’s the look has been carried through to the interior; seats, dash, carpets… even the boot.
It’ll be a tad faster than my old Series 2 as well, it’s powered by a 1.6 Litre Ford Sigma engine that will go from 0-60 in 6 seconds.

On sale in 2010 for £26, 995, you’d need to be pretty flush to get one, but it is kinda lovely.

Vintage Lambretta Scrambling video

The Lambretta scrambler that is for sale on eBay that I posted previously comes with some cine film footage of scooter scrambling… which prompted me to do a little search on YouTube. I found this marvelous period video. Who knows… that eBay scrambler could even be on the vid.
I love the precision tools being used for the last minute adjustments… seemed you only really needed 3 tools… a hacksaw, a hammer, and a bigger hammer!

The Lambretta LN – what it means to the US lambrettisti

Screen_shot_2011-05-25_at_18

I’ve written about the “new Lambretta” …the LN… before. I’m sure I will again. There’s an excellent article here on the consistently good US based Scooterlounge blog.

The Cap’n makes some good points about the Lambretta brand… and how it has been devalued. I’m kinda with him there, although I have seen some great Lambretta branded products, there is a definite lack of of quality control.
There’s some “official Lambretta merchandise” that is just pure tat. Any hoo… read the article and make your own mind up.
Don’t get me wrong, I haven’t seen the new LN yet, so I’ve yet to make my mind up yet. I’m definitely NOT an apologist for the LN. But there are a couple of definite ‘plusses” in my mind.
1. The manufacturers have actually looked at classic Lambretta’s before designing the look of this scoot. There are real design cues from the original.
2. It’s made of metal
So, anybody seen one, or actually ridden one yet?
I’d love to have to have some real world experience on here.
