Proper Mod TV. And it could be yours.

Mod TV175
So, if you read the Richard Barnes Mod! book that I posted about a few days ago, or you’ve watched Quadrophenia recently, and you’ve decided a Mod Lambretta is the way to go, IMHO you couldn’t do much worse that buying this little beauty, a fully loaded, chromed and accessorised TV175. The secret, again, in my ever so humble opinion, is taste. Knowing when to stop. Knowing exactly what accessories (absolutely period perfect of course) to include, and what to leave off. And if these pics are ringing any bells, it may be that you’ve either seen the scoot in the flesh, or in one of the articles about it in Scootering. It’s even been a cover star on that esteemed publication.

Jolly nice J50 for sale…

1968 Lambretta J50 for Sale on eBayI love this little J50 I have discovered on eBay… looks like it’s in pretty good, original condition; the sign writing looks bang on, and contemporaneous with the scooter. I imagine it was originally a municipal vehicle for the Italian equivalent of the local council. Fantastic. Great patina… and no, that’s not a euphemism for “rusty as ••••” . In my opinion, the new owner would should keep this scooter exactly as it is… as a little piece of cultural history. Marvellous. all the details, and a few more pics on eBay.

Spiders even an arachnophobiac would love…

Spider 3 280510 resizedMost Lambrettisti know about the Innocenti Minis, which I have posted about before. Well, while Innocenti were making deals to manufacture British cars, they also had their eye on the blossoming Italian sportscar market. They wanted to make a small sport car, along the lines of the Frogeye Sprite… but thought that it’s rather distinctive look would not go down too well with Italian buyers. They commissioned Carrozzeria Ghia to design new bodywork based on the Sprite platform, but more to Italian tastes.

I think the results speak for themselves, a very elegant vehicle with shades of Triumph, Healy, MG, Alfa Romeo and even Ferrari about it, depending on the angle you look at it from. The Innocenti 950 Spider is a very handsome sports car.950 Spider (b) Spider just before doing Buttertubs resized

Innocenti Coupé
As well as the Spider there was also a Coupé version. Known as the Innocenti Coupé, or simply the Innocenti C, these had the larger 1098 engine. These little beauties are now extremely rare… with only 795 examples built… and all in one of the three colours of the italian flag. They were also pretty expensive at the time, due to their low production number, and the high quality, ‘hand-built’ finish.  At first glance, the Coupé seems like a Spider with a roof, but virtually all the body panels, including the bonnet, are completely different from the Spider. It is in fact a bigger car all round than the Spider, 4″ wider and 6″ longer. The width produces a roomier cabin, whilst the extra length is all between the rear edge of the door and the start of the rear wheel arch which proportions the car nicely, and helps give the Coupé it’s elegant ‘rear end’.

All four of the cars shown above, the Spider and three Coupés, make up the Collezione Innocenti. Further details of these four wonderful vehicles, including the various books and magazine articles they have appeared in, and the many concours d’élélegance competitions they have won are on the Collezione Innocenti website, here. And now, after many years in the same ownership this group of four unique cars, is for sale. Well, since I started typing this article, the red coupé has been sold, so if you’re interested, you’d better be quick. Email info@innocentispider.co.uk or call 01943 608900 for more information.

Iconic new Lambretta chair

Iconic Design LI-150-chairThis is a must have for the modern Lambrettista equipping the world coolest office… or home. I’ve seen something similar based upon *cough “another scooter” …but it didn’t have half the cachet of these iconic pieces.

Although you might want to simply display these chairs as a piece of art,  you’ll be glad to know they do work as fully functioning chairs.

Each chair is hand built and can be fully customised to your requirements… the model from an LI Series 1 to a GP/DL… the colour, either traditional Lambretta colours or custom colours, and the chrome badges… even the colour of the leather and how it’s stitched. You can even add your own company branding.

They are the brainchild of Jim Piester, founder of Johannesburg (South Africa) based Iconic Design. Jim, who is behind the whole idea, is a Lambretta rider himself (his is the candy orange GP you can glimpse behind the chair, or better in this post), and has been since the age of 16. His background in manufacturing engineering, including a 9 year stint at Rolls Royce and Bentley, have paid off in his attention to detail in the finishing of the final chair.

Jim has other products already in the pipeline, including a Lambretta inspired sofa, armchair and bar stools. There is also a Series One version, including a working headlight… how cool is THAT?

The pricing seems remarkably reasonable too…

£951 +postage for a GP chair (DL/GP or electronic)

£1,035 + postage for a Series Two chair (Li or TV)

£1,100 + postage for a Series One with working headlight (Li or TV)

£1,079 + postage for a Series Three chair (SX, Special and TV)

Compare what you’d pay for the V*spa version… (Google it, I’m not linking to it) and you’ll see how favourably these compare pricewise. Designwise, there’s NO comparison.

Update: Here’s a rather lovely GP200 Electronic version Jim’s currently working on…gp200_12 electronic_1

Flakey Framebreather

$_57MetalFlakey that is. I think this is what you’d call a ‘real bobby dazzler’ gold and copper metalflake on S1 Framebreather. Spotted this on beauty on eBay… it’s in just finished condition and got a Stage 4, 200cc engine in, so the performance won’t be a let down. I know this is a late 50’s scoot… but for me, it’s got a bit of a 70’s vibe about it. In a good way. If Brian Connolly rode a Lammy, it would look like this. A Sweet ride.$_57-4 $_57-2 $_57-3 $_57You like? Buy it on eBay here. Go on, treat yourself.

Scomadi update… with rough pricing and first delivery dates

558962_10152043825888545_1737298289_nMy post about the Lambretta lookalike Scomadi scooter from Lambretta Innovations was the most popular single article I’ve ever posted on the Lambrettista blog, so there’s obviously a great deal of interest in this lovely looking GP inspired machine. 1461457_10152026457263545_1650804399_n

Below are some more pics, showing, I think, the general high level of finish, and quality of materials used. This isn’t something that’s been bolted together from a parts bin, it’s been designed (albeit based on a Bertone original, but hey, if you’re going to imitate somebody Bertone is not a bad place to start), refined, and refined again. The refining process isn’t quite finished yet, as there are a few more tweaks before the Scomadi hits full production. And that’s not far off. They’re talking about “early spring” for the first deliveries, and seeing as we are nearly in December now, that’s not too long to wait.1479480_10152043825688545_1004903713_n 1464667_10152043825493545_1211942085_n 994957_10152043825643545_2014980406_n 1460014_10152043825508545_404014742_n 1460042_10152043825683545_1752958225_n 1476477_10152043825858545_1396063568_n 1455898_10152043825533545_1179825614_n

Regarding pricing, word is that the 50cc should come in at around £1800, the 125 version at something over £2000 depending on the exact spec required. So not outrageously expensive, and certainly more affordable than I was expecting. No word yet on the flagship TL300, although that will clearly be the most expensive of the range. These aren’t official figures yet, so hold fire before popping down to see the bank manager. As before, keep track of the latest developments on the Scomadi website, or their Facebook page.

UPDATE: There’s a good article in this months SCOOTERING Magazine, with an interview from Paul Melici, one half of the partnership behind the Scomadi scooter. There’s a bit more info there, so get down to your newsagents and bag yourself a copy. But remember where you read it FIRST 🙂

On a related note, fans of the “new Lambretta” the LN, may be pleased to hear that there may be positive news on this soon. Legal battles with holders of the Lambretta brand name seem to be finally coming to a conclusion, so we may be seeing more about these well reviewed machines again soon. Not everyone’s cup of tea, I know, but an official Lambretta is not a bad thing in my book, even if it simply serves as a “gateway drug” to an original classic 🙂
